The main event for our racers this weekend was the Teesdale CRC 21 mile SPOCO, starting from Staindrop and looping through Ingleton and Piercebridge before returning to Staindrop to finish.

The event was won by Ryan Perry of Team Raleigh GAC, a reigning National Champion at four distances. Ryan set a new course record of 45-00.

Hartlepool CC placed two riders in the first 10, Paul Thirling being 6th in 49-06 and Paul Fountain 10th in 51-07. Paul F was first in the very competitive over-50s category.

Richie Grant eased himself back into action after his painful fall last time out and posted a creditable 51-07. He’ll be even quicker when he takes his stabilisers off!

Hard luck story of the day was Phil Wright’s. He put so much power into his first pedal stroke that his cleat snapped ending his race before it had started.  Frustrating, particularly as he was sure he was on for a personal best!

Last weekend, new member Peter Nicholson became the first club member to complete an organised sportive in 2017. He tackled the 67 mile York-Leeds-York event.

Phil Wright and Gary Hunt made a 300 mile round trip to race the Bolsover and District CC 10 near Worksop, Nottinghamshire on the O105 course. Gary was 21st out of a field of 75 in 22-22, with Phil 55th in 26-25. The course was technically tricky with some fast stretches through built-up areas where our lads had to be careful not to break the speed limit. The event was won by Liam Bromley of Team Giant in 20-22.

Our first club championship takes place a week next Sunday, 9th April. This is the SPOCO championship which is incorporated in the Stockton Wheelers 23 mile event out of Bishopton. We’re expecting a strong turnout from Hartlepool CC and a keenly-contested race.
