 Philip Russell Memorial Road Race

The Philip Russell Memorial Road Race was run on the Stokesley/Seamer course over 7 laps, a total of 63 miles. The weather conditions were cold but sunny with a moderate wind. After a rolling start a group of 5 riders broke away from the main field and over the first lap gained an advantage of 1 minute over the rest of the field. The leading group were working well together and their time advantage over the peloton was increased due to a crash on the 2nd climb of Skutterskelf, this resulted in the peloton been split. The leading group maintained their advantage until the end of the 5th lap when they were eventually caught by the chasing bunch. With the riders expecting a respite an immediate attack by 5 riders split the group which proved to be the winning break.  The 5 riders worked hard to increase their advantage over the peloton and on the last lap Ashley Brown ( sportscover ) launched an attack, this resulted in the 5 been split. Brown started to increase his advantage over Kevin Dawson and Bradley Johnson (both Sportscover ) and in the home straight he had time to zip up his jersey and free wheel over the finishing line to take victory. Kevin Dawson was the next rider home followed by Bradley Johnson, with Chris Herbert (MTS) beating Phil Axe (Sharrow CC) into 4th place.

First Hartlepool CC rider home was Mark Brough who was involved in the crash on Skutterskelf.

Being the organizer of this year’s Phillip Russell Memorial Road Race I would like to thank all members of Hartlepool CC and Andrew Moss from Adept Precision Road Team who assisted on the day which resulted in successful event
